Movie Cars: Mad Max Fury Road

If you like movies about post apocalyptic wastelands, then Mad Max Fury Road is a movie for you. This movie was honestly a super cool one and I enjoyed watching it. What definitely stands out in this movie are the super crazy cars and vehicles that are used. The production designer and art director of the film, Colin Gibson, was in charge of all the super cool vehicles. He wanted cars that had style and something he would think that would have been salvaged in this wasteland, unlike a simple Honda Civic, etc. Gibson and a bunch of teams of mechanics created 150 crazy apocalyptic vehicles, that is an insane amount of heavily armored cars. What is even cooler is all the stunts in the movie were real so unfortunately a lot of the beasts were destroyed.

Let’s get into some detail on some of the cars.

1. Mad Max’s Interceptor

Played by Tom Hardy, Max drove a 1974 XB Ford Falcon Coupe which was also used in the first films with Mel Gibson. 

2.Furosia and her War Rig

Played by Charlize Theron, Furosia drove a huge truck. A Czechoslovakian Tatra and a Chevy Fleetmaster combined together to be a 6 wheel drive 18 wheeler. The rig also carried a huge fuel tank. 

3.Doof Warrior’s Doof WagonThis is my favorite vehicle from the movie. It’s a huge vehicle which housed a massive amount of subwoofers and featured a stage with lighting for the Doof Warrior. There was a cord suspended in the front for him to hang on and play his electric guitar that flames would come out of. The Doof Wagon is pictured above.

Movie Cars: Corvette Summer

 

Corvette Summer is a movie definitely known for its car. This corvette was driven by Kenny Dantley, played by Mark Hamill, a high school kid in love with all things cars. Kenny’s shop class in school has a project where he needs to build a car, and the one above is what he comes up with. A unique right hand drive Corvette Stingray. The car gets stolen and Dantley wants to get it back so he hitchhikes his way to Las Vegas where he heard it would be. 

Now let’s get into the car. This odd Corvette started as a 1973 Corvette C3. With a lot of body work and fiberglass, the car was transformed. About the right hand drive mentioned above, the car was altered to be driven from the passenger seat so Hamill’s character was able to schmooze the girls on the sidewalk.

Movie Cars: Coupe De Ville

During the snow day this past Monday, we watched Coupe De Ville. This movie came out in 1990 and starred a very young Patrick Dempsey. You might think that the vehicle in this movie is a Coupe de Ville, well it actually is a Cadillac Series 62 Convertible. The Coupe de Ville did not come in a convertible model actually. I found this fact really interesting being the fact that the movie is named after the wrong car. 

The movie is about three brothers who have to deliver a car to their mom for her birthday, a surprise set up by their dying father. The three brothers do not get along unfortunately and fight the whole way. Throughout the movie, the brothers experience some road blocks, but they get through it. In the end they end up making up and liking each other, which was their dad’s real goal. It was a good movie, I do recommend it!

Movie Cars: Transformers

In 2007, not only did we see an amazing movie with the coolest CGI, but the return of the classic Chevrolet Camaro. Transformers reintroduced us to the Camaro in a new form. The 5th generation model was to come out in 2010. Michael Bay, the director, had a close relationship with GM and was able to use a concept of the 5th gen Camaro in his film. This car was of course the loveable Bumblebee. 

When the movie starts we meet Bumblebee as a 1977 2nd gen Camaro. Later on in the movie, Bumblebee scans a passing 5th generation Camaro and “transforms” into the car we all know and love. To make Bumblebee, Bay and the team at GM made molds of the 2006 concept of the 5th gen that was touring around to auto shows.

Movie Cars: Talladega Nights: The Ballad Of Ricky Bobby

 The 2006 hit comedy, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby is one of my all time favorite movies and Will Ferrell, who plays the NASCAR driver Ricky Bobby, is one of my favorite actors. This movie is about a man named Ricky Bobby who wants to go fast. As a kid, his father told him, “If you ain’t first, you’re last” and this mantra has been a part of his life as he became to be one of the best race car drivers out there. 

The cars that were used for this movie were sold off in an auction. Ricky’s #26 Wonder Bread car, pictured above, is a 2004 Chevy Monte Carlo body with the whole race car package underneath. The other car Will Ferrell drove, the ME car is a 2004 Ford Taurus body with all the necessary components to make it a race car. Since these are race cars, they cannot legally be driven on the street. So the people who were lucky enough to win these cars at the auction are definitely collectors.

Movie Cars: Cars

Disney and Pixar’s 2006 movie Cars brought us so many fun loving characters based on real cars! The Cars franchise consists of 3 films and several shorts. I am a huge Disney and Pixar fan so these movies have been a favorite of mine for some time now. My nephew is the biggest Mater fan I know. 

Cars is about a racer, Lightning McQueen who ends up falling out of his transport vehicle Mack. He finds himself in a small quaint town, Radiator Springs off of the famous Route 66. He accidentally damages the main road in the town and has to repair it before he is allowed to leave. Lightning is in a huge rush to leave this little town because he is going to a race where he has a chance of winning the Piston Cup. While he is in Radiator Springs, he has a very doom and gloom outlook and is not happy being there. The people of this small town begin to grow on him and he realizes how important friendship is. He gains his new best friend Mater there and a whole new family. 

Being that these cars are animated you might not think they are based off of anything in real life. Well, they really are! Some of the cars like Lightning are a mixture of a few different things. To make Lightning, the studio took inspiration from the C1 and C6 Chevy Corvette! Lightning’s girlfriend Sally, is a slightly modified Porsche 911 Carrera. Mater, the fun loving tow truck is based off two different trucks, a 1951 International Harvester and a Chevy Boom Truck. Mack, the transport vehicle and old friend of Lightning is based off a 1985 Mack Super-Liner. I think it is so cool to see how these animated favorites are based on real life cars!

Movie Cars: Herbie Fully Loaded

 

The most famous Volkswagen Beetle is the 1963 Herbie The Love Bug! This car has been a favorite of mine since I was young. Growing up I would collect Herbie merchandise and Beetle diecast cars. I even had green Beetle slippers. Naturally I watched the original Herbie The Love Bug movies, but today we are going to be talking about the most recent Herbie film, Herbie Fully Loaded starring Lindsay Lohan.

Herbie Fully Loaded was about a young girl, Lindsay Lohan, who wanted to be a NASCAR driver like her father. As a gift, her father takes her to a junkyard to pick out a car. She has her eyes on one, but Herbie keeps pushing his way towards her and she ends up leaving with a 1963 Volkswagen Beetle. Herbie always has crazy antics up his sleeve and never fails when helping out a friend. 

Over the years, there have been probably more than 50 Beetles used in filming, unfortunately most were destroyed. Multiple on screen Herbies have been sold over the years for some good money. Herbie helped make Volkswagen Beetles not only popular, but the most produced car ever!
